VP1606 is a multi-segment sound playback chip which uses external EPROM for data storage. The
chip contains a DAC and can access up to 64 sound segments of different length. Each segment is controlled by a 6-bit binay code. Memory addressing is handled by the chip itself. No microprocessor control is needed. Simple
logic pulses are used to start/stop the playback operation. A basic design can be constructed with the chip and a few more components.
VP1606 employs the Continuously Variable Slope Delta (CVSD) compression technique
with variable sampling rates from 24 to 128 Kbps. Samping clock can be generated internally with a simple R/C network, or an external clock can be used. Operated with a single 5V supply, the VP1606 is a low power device
suitable for battery operated applications.
For VP1606 based designs, VP880 QuikVoice Development System must be used for sound development. VP880 is a computer based sound digitization, editing and management system.
After the sound is developed, it is programmed into EPROM chips with a standard EPROM programmer. Eletech also provides sound development and programming service to customers who do not want to do it themselves.
